UNITED FARM WORKERS ENDORSE
ROB BONTA FOR STATE ASSEMBLY

OAKLAND, CA – The Rob Bonta for California State Assembly campaign today announced the endorsement of the United Farm Workers (UFW), which for decades has fought to improve wages and working conditions for farm workers here in California and across the nation.

“I spent a number of my early childhood years in the UFW headquarters in La Paz in the California Central Valley where my parents were a strong part of the movement and worked as farm worker organizers alongside UFW leaders Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, Philip Vera Cruz, Pete Velasco, Gilbert Padilla, and Jose Gomez. Members of the UFW helped raise me and I am honored to have the UFW’s support as together we continue the fight for justice that they and my parents began almost 40 years ago,” said Rob Bonta.

Earlier this year Bonta marched with the UFW as part of the March for Fair Treatment for Farm Workers, a 13-day pilgrimage from the Central Valley to Sacramento to protect farm workers’ rights to join a union, provide reasonable overtime, and promote dignity for those whose backbreaking work feeds millions across the nation.  “The work my family began in La Paz will continue until we bring economic justice from the fields to the inner city, and I am honored to champion the cause for the UFW and my brothers and sisters in the labor movement,” said Bonta.

Rob Bonta is becoming the clear favorite for organized labor in this race, having secured more labor support than other contenders with an additional seven unions in his corner.

Rob Bonta is running for the 18th Assembly District, which includes all or portions of the cities of Alameda, Oakland, and San Leandro. The district is currently represented by Assembly Member Sandré Swanson, who will be termed out in 2012.

Throughout his career in public service, Vice Mayor Bonta has distinguished himself as a strong advocate for California’s public schools. He has fought to prevent layoffs of firefighters and police officers, foster economic development, exercise fiscal responsibility, and improve recreation opportunities for families.
