OAKLAND – Incumbent California State Assemblymember Sandré Swanson today announced his endorsement of Alameda Vice Mayor Rob Bonta for the 18th Assembly District.

“I am humbled to be Assemblymember Swanson’s choice to represent Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro in the State Assembly,” said Vice Mayor Bonta.

“Assemblymember Swanson leaves an impressive legacy of hard work and dedication to the East Bay during his six years in office. He has been a staunch advocate for improving the lives of children through increased access to education and health services, as well as protecting our youth from human trafficking and exploitation,” said Bonta. “As a parent, I appreciate every day the work Assemblymember Swanson has done to make communities safer—and the future brighter—for our children.”

“Assemblymember Swanson has also been a leader in the fight for social and economic justice. He has taken a leading role in reducing recidivism and focusing on rehabilitation, because the fight against crime begins in the classroom and the workplace. As Chair of the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee, Assemblymember Swanson has stood up for jobs that provide a living wage, good benefits, safe working conditions, and where employees are treated with dignity.”

“But most of all, Assemblymember Swanson is the progressive conscience of the Assembly, never forgetting his values and always putting his constituents first. I am proud to stand with Assemblymember Swanson as we continue the fight for better schools, safer streets, and to build a more prosperous East Bay.”

Rob Bonta is the California Democratic Party’s endorsed candidate in the 18th Assembly District, which includes all or portions of the cities of Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro. The district is currently represented by Assemblymember Sandré Swanson, who was first elected in 2006 and is currently serving his final term.

Throughout his career in public service, Vice Mayor Bonta has distinguished himself as a strong advocate for Alameda’s and California’s public schools. He has fought to prevent layoffs of firefighters and police officers, foster economic development, exercise fiscal responsibility, and improve recreation opportunities for families.
