Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association Endorses Vice Mayor Bonta For Assembly

For Immediate Release – September 29th, 2011

San Leandro, CA – The Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA) today endorsed Alameda Vice Mayor Rob Bonta for California State Assembly in District 18. M.E.B.A is the oldest and largest maritime officers’ union in the United States still in operation, established in 1875.  MEBA. primarily represents licensed mariners, especially deck and engine officers working in the United States Merchant Marine, which deliver critical defense cargo to United States armed forces in times of military conflict.

“Rob Bonta has been a consistent champion for workers on the waters of the San Francisco Bay,” said MEBA San Francisco-Oakland Patrolman Patrick Anderson. “He’s been a strong advocate for well paying jobs that provide security and dignity for people who play an essential role in our economy’s goods movement sector.”

“I am honored to receive MEBA’s support in our campaign for well paying jobs and living wages,” said Vice Mayor Bonta. “From the Port of Oakland, which is fourth in the nation by container volume, to the Marina in San Leandro and the Coast Guard in Alameda, Alameda County is a bustling hub of maritime economic activity. That’s why I spearheaded the creation of Alameda’s America’s Cup Committee to help local maritime businesses benefit from the world’s third largest sporting event.”

MEBA is just the latest labor union to endorse Vice Mayor Bonta, following the support of the Alameda Police Officers Association, Alameda Firefighters, Local 689, and José Gomez, former executive assistant to UFW co-founder Cesar Chavez.

Throughout his career in public service, Vice Mayor Bonta has distinguished himself as a strong advocate for Alameda’s and California’s public schools. He has fought to prevent layoffs of firefighters and police officers, foster economic development, exercise fiscal responsibility, and improve recreation opportunities for families.
